Photography in the Bluebell Woods Hampshire

We took advantage of the very brief respite in the rain, and headed over, with my budding film photographer, to a very muddy but pretty bluebell woods nearby. It’s a shame that spring has been so rainy here in the UK, with all the beautiful spring blossom ending up in a wet soggy pile on the ground, but all this lovely rain has made things so lush and green. Here’s hoping for a beautiful and bountiful summer and autumn instead!

Film Friday

And, it’s another film friday post! I can’t believe where the month of April has gone. I’ve been taking lots of family photos as well as doing more nursery sessions, but today I have chosen to show some of my highly experimental film shots. Wednesday saw the 40 year anniversary of the polaroid SX-70 camera and since I recently acquired one I am showing the first few polaroids that came from it. Polaroid has unfortunately discontinued production of these cameras as well as their film, but a few intrepid people and ex-employees managed to save the very last polaroid plant in the Netherlands and they have been trying to develop their own film for these very old cameras. They were unable to acquire the film formulation that polaroid used so they are themselves trying to reproduce and develop their own version of instant film. They have called themselves the Impossible Project. I bought some of the earlier batches which produced these brown undeveloped divots. Despite the blurriness, weird colour, strange mottling and undeveloped patches, I am still very excited about this process and I’ll certainly be experimenting some more as well as trying a couple of other techniques called lifting and transfers – more about that when I do them! Also, I believe their last 2 batches of film are much less prone to these divots and have better colour and contrast, so I have ordered some of those! These last 2 are also experimental – purposefully underexposed on kodak portra 160 but tried to scan to add a little bit more contrast and tried to see how low I can go with the shutter speed under low lighting conditions (these were 1/60 in a fairly dark room). Cheerful Toddler: Family Photography in Eastleigh

I met this lovely family as one of their university friends bought them a gift certificate as a present. Their friend said that their little boy was just a sweetheart and oh so cute – she was not exaggerating! This little boy had the bluest eyes and the most cheerful disposition. It was a pleasure to take their family photos.

Film Friday: Old School Processing on Spring Blossoms

It’s the last friday or the month which means my film blog circle will be posting our take on this month’s theme of favourite colour. I’ve been lucky as one of my favourite colours happen to be pink, the weather has been great and there is blossom everywhere. These have been taken with a discontinued film – fuji 800z and my 50 year old rolleiflex. The scans have turned out quite pale and rather reminiscent of faded 70s photographs. The last one was taken on slide film – also discontinued (fuji astia). Film Friday: Early morning walk in Horsey Field

I went for a walk one foggy morning along this field which locals have dubbed “Horsey Field”. As you can see, there are few ponies living there, and quite a few dog walkers also come here. This is the field that many of the local children go to for sledging when we get any snow. It was a bitter-sweet walk as this field has been earmarked for quite a densely packed housing development. I guess I need to take more advantage of it whilst it’s still there. These were taken on my rolleiflex and on my first roll of fuji astia. I really like the look of astia, unfortunately it has been discontinued by fuji. Hhmm, I guess I better stock up on astia before the stocks are all sold out.

Dancing for Charity: Event Photography Hampshire

I had the pleasure and privilege of attending my first ever zumba class last monday. Fortunately, I wasn’t dancing but photographing the event as this particular class was hosted by Sara Kayley to raise funds for the research charity “Against Breast Cancer“. It was very well attended, people had lots of energy and were very generous. Sara also held a raffle for lots of goodies from the charity. The event may be over but if you’d like to donate, please contact Sara on her facebook page.

I was very enamoured with the sparkle and movement of this orange belly dancing scarf (in fact, I might even attend a proper class just so I can wear one!)

Film Friday: Child Portrait Photography in Winchester

Here are a couple more square shots from my rolleiflex. I’m loving getting to know this camera and trying to compose to a square format. I’m also trying to get to know my scanner (an epson v500) and I have absolute respect for all those who do scanning for a living – it is an art all in itself! She wasn’t feeling well today nor the day the day these were taken, but she can still rock the serious look. The colour photo is taken on fuji 800z (a very magenta film and unfortunately now discontinued), and the black and white is fuji acros 100.

I’ve also joined a marvellous group of photographers who are delving back into film photography and we are going to post on our blogs about all things filmy on the last friday of each month.
